In 2022 Indigenous songwriter Francis Baptiste released his debut album, Sneqsilx (Family), an album that features songs sung in his native language Nsyilxcən [nah-silk-sen], the endangered language of the Syilx [see-ilks] people. The 10-song album was his effort to preserve and connect with his heritage. The chance to reconnect with his roots helped him through turbulent times.

Following the release, Baptiste performed for the Talking Stick Festival, Vancouver Jazz Fest, Music Waste Festival, Rogue Arts Festival, Barnside Harvest Festival, Shipyards Festival, Khatsahlano Festival, and the PNE. Singles from Sneqsilx (Family) were played on CBC Radio, SiriusXM, and college radio stations across the country. The album received press in Exclaim Magazine, the Vancouver Sun, Discorder Magazine, the Times Chronicle, and several music blogs.

Baptiste’s sophomore LP is set to release in the Summer of 2024. The new work continues to feature songs in the endangered language of Nsyilxcen. It also continues to explore themes of addiction and Indigenous identity in the face of estrangement and assimilation.

Prepare yourself for a sonic journey like no other! On Saturday, November 23rd, Red Bird Brewing will host The History of Gunpowder, a dynamic and experimental 8-piece freak-out orchestra from Vancouver. Known for their theatrical, gritty, and unforgettable live performances, this band blends expansive orchestral arrangements with growling blues vocals and danceable funk rhythms to create a truly electric live show.
 
With influences ranging from Tom Waits to Radiohead, The History of Gunpowder has made a name for itself as one of the best live touring acts in Canada. Their latest release, Swallows, recorded in a 19th-century church, showcases the band’s ability to push the boundaries of sound and performance, creating an intimate yet powerful musical experience.

Ahmet Eren Yigit is popping up at Soe this Saturday for a special dinner. Born and raised on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, Ahmet moved to Canada in 2013 and started his cooking career at @eatatelma. More recently, he was the head pastry chef at @clayoquotwildernesslodge in Tofino, receiving three Michelin keys last summer.

Inspired by his Turkish heritage and coastal experiences, Ahmet will be showcasing his personal style with the use of beautiful local ingredients in the Okanagan.
